Children whisper tales of a strange hermit, the Hairy Man, who haunts the winding road along the Brushy Creek. Many legends persist about the Hairy Man. Some believe he was an infant accidentally left behind by settlers heading west in the 1800s. Raised by wild animals in the fern bluffs, the Hairy Man viewed the creek as his own. He resented the intrusion of strangers into his territory and would jump out of the trees to frighten people away. Or, hanging from the leafy canopy above the road, he would drag his feet across the top of passing carriages. On one occasion, the Hairy Man attacked a horse-drawn wagon, spooking the horses. The old hermit was supposedly run over by the wagon and killed, and now his spirit lingers along the creek and road.
On a silent, moonlit night, perhaps you will see his eerie silhouette on the bluffs along Brushy Creek. The faint, other-worldly moan that echoes through the night. Is it the sound of the wind as it pushes through the treetops or the lonely cry of a coyote or perhaps….something more sinister?

Christa claims the place is haunted. For example, frequently, guests hear strange noises coming from the kitchen. They hear the sounds of pots and pans banging during late hours of the night when the staff has gone home from work. Christa, herself, has also had strange encounters in the hotel. She’s heard her name called when no one’s around. She’s felt her hair pulled. Christa Hill says the most bizarre experience in the hotel happened after a long-term guest died from a heart attack in the room where she lived. Because the woman died in there, Christa says the hotel had to strip the furniture, the carpet and the wires from the room. Even with the wiring gone, the staff still received calls from the room on the switchboard.
The reputation of the Clewiston Inn has spread. Over the years, Christa has allowed many different ghost hunting groups to check out the hotel. Recently, the Florida Paranormal Research Team investigated. The group is based out of Fort Myers. They use all kinds of equipment that can detect paranormal activity: EMF meters, K2 meters, digital voice recorders, digital cameras and a new tool called the Paranormal Puck. “Out of this World” did a good take on the Wem Town Hall “ghost” that we mentioned as an impressive example of pareidolia. They present videos of the actual fire, present the case and myth, and the latest information I had that analysis by Vernon Harrison on the negatives didn’t find any evidence of tampering. Thus, it seemed it was either a real ghost or a simulacrum.
