HOUSTON (KTRK) — You see the red light cameras at intersections across the city, snapping pictures of drivers running red lights. A local group that has been fighting those cameras for years is leading the effort to have voters decide whether the cameras should stay or go.

When it comes to red light cameras, it’s not hard to find some Houstonians who’d like to see them gone.

“They have flaws, they invade people’s privacy,” said Lerardrick Phillips, who opposes red light cameras.

However, simply wanting change on Houston streets is one thing, making it happen is another.

On Friday, the group Citizens Against Red Light Cameras began mailing out some 20,000 letters to voters in Houston. They are hoping to encourage residents to sign a petition that could put the issue before a citywide vote.

The people spearheading the campaign, two attorneys suing the city, say the program is just a money-making effort by the city. They also say officials have never proven red light cameras protect the public, citing the City of Houston’s own internal emails.

“This is Professor Stein’s report, ‘The absolute number of collisions that camera monitored approaches is not decreasing,’” said attorney Paul Kubosh. “Let’s be fair. Let the citizens vote. Give the power to the people to make this decision on whether or not they want to put up with this.”

Houston police admit the current data does not support a reduction in accidents at red light camera intersections, however they say cameras are beneficial by holding red light drivers accountable.

Petition to End the War CONTEST WINNERS – Young Americans for Liberty

Think back seven years ago. In March 2003, the Bush administration sold the war in Iraq.All throughout the halls of Congress and in Washington, DC, policy makers gave the American people guarantees, certainties, and promises.

Looking back, it’s amazing how far off course our foreign policy has drifted. The outright ignorance, exaggerations, and lies given by the Bush administration to justify war was nothing short of disgraceful. Now, Obama has doubled-down on the same failed policies, vowing to police the world and reshape the Middle East.

A sensible foreign policy must return to America. Our national debt has increased by trillions; our civil liberties are under assault; and most importantly, more than 6,400 Americans have lost their lives in foreign lands and another 40,000 have been wounded.

If you believe ObamaCare is scary, please look at our foreign policy since September 11, 2001. Our government is out of control.

Needless to say, our freedoms and our future depend on an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We can no longer afford it.

YAL members and chapters recognize these ongoing dangers, and more than 20 YAL chapters took to their campuses to “Petition to End the War” last month.Students passed out educational materials, raised awareness on campus, and collected petitions to send to their representatives.

Young people are waking up and realizing there was no change from Bush to Obama. For the first time, many liberal students are starting to understand a pro-free market, pro-small government message is the only path to peace.

Throughout March, YAL chapters competed among themselves to collect petition signatures and raise awareness on campus. Chapters were encouraged to record videos, take pictures, and write a report summerizing their event. First Place: YAL @ University of California-San Diego

On March 31st, YAL at the University of California-San Diego held their “End the War” petition drive. Their chapter honored our fallen troops with a war memorial, and students flocked to their display. Pages of petitions were signed to put an end to the wars.Their list of signatures, all-day commitment, and high-quality video earned them FIRST prize! They earned a signed poster by Congressman Ron Paul, Judge Napolitano, and Tom Woods along with 3 YAL t-shirts.

Second Place: YAL @ University of Central Florida

On March 31, young liberty activists from the University of Central Florida came together to raise awareness about our never changing Foreign Policy and the need to return to non-Interventionism. A memorial was erected to honor all of the American casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a strong case was made to shift U.S. foreign policy.For second prize, they will receive pro-peace t-shirts, a picture signed by Ron Paul, and assorted bumper stickers.

Third Place (tie): YAL @ St. Cloud State and Wake Forest University

After the school administration tried to shut them down, the YAL chapter at St. Cloud State University fought for their right to free speech and hosted one of the most successful events. Their chapter managed to collect more than 250 signatures in support of H.R. 248 – to present to our Representative, Michele Bachmann – and increased their membership by 50% in a single day!

On March 20, YAL @ Wake Forest University honored the troops we have lost these past seven years. Their activism gave students an opportunity to witness the impact of war on our generation — 6,420 American troops, many our age, have lost their lives in the Middle East wars.Watch as they informed and recruited young students to our message of peace:

On October 14, 2009, at the same event at the University of Southern California where WeAreChangeLA had confronted former Secretary of the Air Force Thomas C. Reed on 9/11 war games and the threats of nuclear treason ( http://www.911blogger.com/node/21693 ), a conversation was struck up with Priya Vashista, a nano-energetics expert and USC professor. Vashista gave his version of a possible explanation for a spontaneous type of thermitic reaction involving the aluminum from the planes and rust from the buildings’ steel. After being asked whether he was describing what he saw as the potential for the formation of nano-thermite specifically, Vashista said that he was. It was clear that he had not been familiar with the “Active Thermitic Material” itself or the specific nano-tech qualities that it displays. However, in addition to openly stating that “many questions have not been fully explained,” Vashishta was quite open and thankful to receive the abstract from the “Active Thermitic Material” paper and said that he would be willing to comment on it after looking in to it. Although Vashista has not yet responded to an email sent on October 17, 2009 asking for an educated comment on the paper, Gregg Roberts, of www.ae911truth.org and one of the co-authors of the “Active Thermitic Material…” paper, graciously responded to Vashista’s statements in a clarifying and engaging manner.

“This was not just ground up rust and aluminum that were laying next to each other as he suggests.

This was rhomboidal crystalline grains of Fe2O3 measuring consistently 100 nm across, intimately mixed with hexagonal aluminum platelets 1000 nm across and only 40 nm thick. These two particles were held in a well-mixed configuration by a solidified gel solution containing additional fuel. This is NOT common to buildings!!

German ‘Fleshmob’ Protests Airport Scanners

The underwear bomber’s Christmas Day attack has prompted calls for the increased use of full-body scanners at airports that would strip-search passengers down to their naked bodies.

So to protest the use of the so-called Nacktscanner (naked scanner), members of the Pirate Party in Germany organized a “fleshmob” of people who stripped down to their skivvies last Sunday and converged on the Berlin-Tegel airport. They posted a video of their protest to YouTube, with soundtrack provided by Muse’s song “Uprising.” The lyrics articulated their protest: “They will not force us. They will stop degrading us. They will not control us. We will be victorious!”

The protesters marked their bodies with a number of messages such as, “Something to hide?” and “Be a good citizen — drop your pants.”

One woman has the word “diaper” scrawled on her lower back with an arrow pointing to her underwear and the word “prosthetic” printed on her leg. The word “piercing” and an arrow point to one of her breasts. Another woman dressed in a beige sweater and flesh-colored tights wears a sign reading “pixelated.” (To address privacy concerns, security officials say the scanners can be programed to produce a blurred, pixelated image of passengers to protect their modesty.)

The full-body scanners use high-frequency radio waves to produce an image of a passenger’s naked body beneath clothes. Anything a passenger is carrying against the body — weapons, drugs or explosives — would be exposed. The scanners would also reveal the presence of prosthetic devices and breast implants.

As such, there have been privacy and legal concerns raised about the invasive equipment, particularly because it’s unclear if the scanners would be able to detect explosives hidden in body cavities and would therefore likely provide only minimal security.

German and Dutch authorities announced this week that they would be working together to test and possibly deploy full-body scanners in the two countries over the next year. The move comes in the wake of concerns that a would-be bomber was able to board a flight from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport on Dec. 25 wearing packs of chemical explosives concealed in his underwear.

Although Amsterdam has been conducting a test pilot of full-body scanners since 2006, the armed passenger was not scanned by one of the devices before boarding his flight to Detroit. European Union regulations do not currently allow mandatory use of the equipment.

The scanners are currently being used in about 19 U.S. airports, though the Transportation Security Administration has plans to deploy about 300 more. The machines are used on a voluntary basis only; passengers can opt to have a full-body pat down instead of being scanned.
