We wrapped up our Midwest Tour in Peoria yesterday and William got great local TV coverage in Eau Claire Friday. Madison's WISC-TV covered the talk at the University of Wisconsin Saturday (I haven't seen the coverage yet).

HPD SWAT and hostage negotiators are at the Johnson Space Center where a gunman remains holed up in building 44.

"A person with a weapon was in Building 44," confirmed NASA spokesperson Kylie Clem.

Jacobs Engineering, a NASA contractor, confirms that the gunman is one of its employees. He is described as a white male in his 50s or 60s who is armed with a handgun.

There are unconfirmed reports that the man was going to be fired on Friday.

NASA has not released the man's name but his photo was being distributed to NASA guards to ensure he doesn't escape from the NASA campus.

 

"We can confirm that there were at least two shots fired… we can't confirm if anybody has been hit," said HPD Capt. Dwayne Ready.

A source inside JSC told 11 News that a meeting was under way in a conference room when the gunman walked in and pointed a gun at one person. He ordered everyone else out.

"At this point we believe he is in one of the rooms, he has barricaded himself in that room," said Capt. Ready. "We do not know if there's another person inside with the suspect."

NASA security responded and HPD was called after the initial call around 1:40 p.m.

More than 15 police cars could be seen outside the building from Air 11.

At least one ambulance was sent to the scene as a precaution, but there have been no reports of injuries.

Building 44, just north of Rocket Park, houses the communications and engineering departments. It is used to test communication equipment for the space shuttle and International Space Station. There are several labs inside.

Clem couldn't say for certain how many employees worked in the building.  

More than 15 police cars could be seen outside the building.

NASA officials were working to make sure all of thoes workers had been accounted for.

Christine Reichert, space station flight controller at Johnson Space Center, said employees were being told to stay in their buildings.

She said she people in the building close to Building 44 “were all good. That’s all I know.”

Doors to Mission Control were locked as is standard procedure.

About two hours after the shooting, the lockdown was lifted and NASA employees were told to go home.

Space Center Intermediate, a Clear Lake ISD school on the NASA property, was also placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Roads within the 1,600-acre campus were blocked off.

Building 44 is along the path of JSC tours.

Hartsfield said the building was “one of the smaller” office buildings on the JSC campus, where Mission Control is based.

He declined to speculate on how a person would get a gun inside NASA security or what his motives would be.

JSC does not routinely search cars or visitors. Kennedy Space Center in Florida does conduct routine searches.

Paul Rodgers witnessed a "roll playing drill" at just after 7:00pm on April 18, 2007.

3 men running from campus 2 of which were USMC with ear pieces and one with a hand held… Chasing a man with a white t-shirt and a bookbag. They ran from campus and down Turner Street in front of the Boston Beanery. The USMC were ramming their shoulders into the man with the white t-shirt and book bag. Paul ran in my house and told me and I didnt beleive him so I ran out to look and I saw three or maybe four men running almost out of site. Paul told me to get my camera… and I was asking him if it looked like they were trying to arrest him and he said "It looked like a drill" I was still unsure of if it was anything… so I ran to where I could see near the scene and saw a state trooper with lights on and a grey van with swat getting out and I feared the worst. I ran as fast as I could and got my video camera and ran straight to the State Trooper to tell him of what was witnessed. The school president had a threat earlier and I got a bit scared. I just witnessed the worst killing in american history and lost a dear friend, Julia Pryde who was a local activist. I ran to alert the media… this is the first of many videos to come

TxDOT is trying to slip a fast one by Austinites by telling folks they will add “managed lanes” to Mopac (loop 1). Managed lanes are toll lanes. Period.

How do the politicos “control” the traffic with managed/toll lanes?

The politicos like Brewster McCracken and Mayor Wynn (who voted to toll Mopac lanes we’ve already paid for) charge exorbitant amounts to try and price us out of our cars – In California the managed lanes cost $1.00 a mile! And, if you refuse to get into the managed lanes, the free lanes are slowed down to create an incentive. Managed lane users, as they cross over 3 lanes to get in, and cross over 3 lanes to get out of the managed lanes slow down the free traffic. And because the managed/toll lanes eliminate the shoulder, folks with cars breaking down, accidents and those getting tickets stop traffic in the free lanes.

And the toll lanes are 100% funded with our tax dollars – a double tax. Question: If the toll lanes are already paid for, and they charge $1.00 a mile (like they do with managed lanes on Hwy 91 in California) where does the money go? To pay for toll authority raises?
